Why Life Magic and Necromancy Shouldn’t Mix (But Do)

In the world of dark urban fantasy, there are certain laws you just don’t break. You don’t summon what you can’t put back, you don’t trust a vampire with a secret, and you definitely don’t pair a death-wielding Necromancer with a sun-powered Paladin.

And yet, here we are.

The Death-and-Life Paradox

A dark aesthetic moodboard featuring necromancy artifacts and solar magic symbols for the Soul Series lore.
Life and Death: A paradox in every sense.

In the Soul Series, my FMC isn’t your typical “spooky girl.” She’s a powerful necromancer wrestling with generational trauma and a magic that demands more than she often wants to give. By all accounts, she should be a lone wolf. In fact, she lived most of her young adult life that way.

Enter my MMC: a Paladin. But before you think of a holy-rolling priest, think Life Warlock. He derives his power from the sun—the literal source of life on earth. [See their first encounter in Umbral Bonds]

Why Life Magic and Necromancy Don’t Repel (Yet)

Usually these two forces should react like oil and a blowtorch. Life magic and necromancy don't typically mix:

The Law of Repulsion: Death magic is an ending; Solar magic is not only a beginning but a perpetuation, and a preserver. While his magic should and would weaken any other death magic wielder, she is drawn to him.

The Anchor Effect: Instead of burning her, his light acts as a tether, keeping her from drifting too far into the veil.

The Mystery: There is a reason their magic plays nice, but I’m saving that particular ritual for the series finale in Book 4, Reaping Ends.

Beyond the Veil: Exclusive Lore

I just sent out a BTV (Beyond the Veil) update to my inner circle that deepens this lore. This week, I shared a look at the “Necromancer’s Desk”—the strange artifacts and “junk” my FMC keeps around to keep her powers in check. Like this Black Obsidian Scyring Mirror that inspired one of her favorite tools.
